Planning a trip to North India? Then you must check out these 5 things to see and do in Uttarakhand. The state is a gem when it comes to hill stations, unexplored tourists spots, and has a little something for everyone. From religious trips to Kedarnath & Badrinath to the ski paradise Auli there are countless tourist spots in this one state. The list just goes on and on.
I have been to Uttarakhand a couple of times now, and every visit I make sure to wander around a different location and try out something new and exciting. In this post, I am sharing my top 5 favorite locations in my favourite state, Uttarakhand.
#1 You thought Mussoorie was good, head over to Chakrata for the best vacation ever
Unexplored destinations have always caught my attention, and Chakrata is one such place. Located at a short distance of 80kms from Mussoorie, this hill station is truly a paradise. With breathtaking views throughout the way to a rich history, this place has it all.
#2 Go River Rafting in Rishikesh
If you are an adventure junkie, you know this has to be on your list. The period right after monsoons is the right time for this activity. Winters makes the water extremely cold, and it might not be the most pleasant experience. Rishikesh is known for its rafting experience as the might Ganga flows through this area. You have multiple rafting packages you can choose from. From 1.5 hour ride to a long 3-4 hours journey choose what suits you best. Just remember, the views all around is a big bonus along with the ride.

#3 Don’t miss the Ski Paradise of India – Auli
The first time I experienced snow was in Auli. The road to Auli from Dehradun is almost a 10+ hour journey but both the road and the destination is well worth it. The views are spectacular not to mention the gorgeous river sandbanks all throughout. Make sure you stop over for some relaxation and fun by the river beds.
In the hills, it’s all about the journey, the road as much as it is about the final destination.
#4 Visit a local village and celebrate Diwali with them
Ok, I get it. This one is a little tricky. But, if you get the chance to attend choti diwali in any village in Uttarakhand, don’t miss the opportunity. I was fortunate enough to have the experience, and it is indescribable. The love, the celebrations, the true happiness that you derive from everyone around, it’s infectious and it stays with you for a long time.
The meaning of festivals in modern cities is very different from that in villages, any village for that matter. For them, it truly means coming together to celebrate something as a community, and the best part is you become a part of it.
#5 Have a family picnic day at Lokhandi Kanasar
Kanasar is a short distance from Chakrata and is a pleasant place to go to all year round. The lush green forests all around and the tallest deodar trees make for some pretty postcard pictures. There is a big plain stretch of land surrounded by tall deodar trees.
Just bring along a picnic basket with games and food, and enjoy a day with your folks.
